Earwax, which is medically referred to as cerumen, is a natural material created by the ear to maintain cleanliness and provide protection. However, when it becomes hard, it may lead to discomfort, itching, or even a buzzing sound in the ear.

In extreme cases, leaving earwax buildup untreated, also known as cerumen impaction, can obstruct the ear canal and result in hearing difficulties. To learn about safe ways to manage this common concern, here are simple and effective techniques for getting rid of hardened earwax. It is important to avoid putting cotton swabs, matchsticks, or sharp items into the ear since these can drive the wax deeper or potentially damage the ear permanently. Instead, here are safer options listed below:

Ear drops: The initial step is to make the hard earwax softer. You can easily find ear drops at drugstores without needing a prescription. By using these drops regularly for three days, the wax typically softens and comes out on its own. If the blockage continues, a doctor can quickly extract it using a special microscopic method.

Baby oil or Mineral Oil: In case ear drops are not an option, you can use baby oil or mineral oil. When applied similarly, they can also help to soften the wax in three days. However, specialists caution against using other types of oils or inserting any foreign objects into the ear.

Suction Bulb: A suction bulb, which costs between Rs 300 and Rs 1,500, can be found at drugstores and online. It operates on pressure technology, creating gentle suction to pull out the earwax. This straightforward method usually clears the ear in one or two minutes.

Ear Irrigation: If ear drops do not work, ear irrigation is an alternative. This procedure should only be conducted by a qualified professional. During this process, a saline solution is introduced into the ear with a syringe and then gently rinsed out using a special bulb syringe, removing the wax safely.
