mid a furor over a racist Facebook post, described First Lady Michelle Obama as an "ape in heels," a mayor from West Virginia stepped down, local television news channel WSAZ confirmed.

The mayor of the tiny town of Clay, Whaling had appeared to applaud the incendiary comment and resigned amid the ensuing firestorm.

He had apologized in a statement writing: "My comment was not intended to be racist at all."

Pamela Ramsey Taylor, the director of the Clay County Development Corp. had posted after Donald Trump's election, that, "It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels."

"Just made my day Pam," Whaling responded.

According to the Staffers at the Clay County Development Corp,Taylor had been removed from her position.  

The 2010 census showed, Clay has a population of less than 500 and is the seat of Clay County in West Virginia.
