Betsy Edwards has been appointed as the new executive director of the Virginia Press Association (VPA), a trade group for newspapers in the state.
Edwards will replace Ginger Stanley, who was serving as the executive director of the VPA since 1988. 59 year old Edwards has a 30-year career in government relations, communications, fund raising and lobbying.
She served as the director of communications for Child Fund International for two years and also worked as director of development for the ACLU of Virginia and director of development for Preservation Virginia.
Edwards said that, “I really feel very strongly about the role of the press in providing access to government and its workings.” “I think the work of the press association on behalf of newspapers is of critical importance to democracy.”
There are 220 members in the VPA, that includes 21 daily newspapers in the state and numerous weeklies and other publications.
