Elon Musk has become the first person in the world to reach a trillion dollars, stepping into a wealth category that nobody has achieved before, thanks to SpaceX's huge initial public offering (IPO) that increased the value of his vast business interests. Based on company documents and Forbes estimates, Reuters predicts that Musk's wealth will surpass $1.1 trillion once SpaceX begins trading. This company, involved in rockets, satellites, and artificial intelligence, will be the main source of his wealth. This achievement places Musk in a financial realm that is unparalleled. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, even before the SpaceX IPO, Musk was already the richest person globally, with a fortune around $971 billion. Larry Page, who co-founded Alphabet, was in second place with a net worth of about $304 billion, meaning Musk was more than three times wealthier than his nearest competitor.

Musk's wealth is now greater than the yearly economic output of many nations. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Taiwan's economy is approximately valued at $976.7 billion, indicating that the Tesla and SpaceX leader is richer than an entire economy known for its artificial intelligence chips and semiconductor production. His wealth is also comparable to roughly one-fourth of India's GDP, which is estimated to be around $4.15 trillion according to the IMF. The significant increase in Musk's wealth resulted from SpaceX's record-setting $75 billion IPO, which was reported by Reuters as the largest IPO ever.

Before the stock sale, Forbes assessed Musk's wealth to be around $780 billion. His investment in SpaceX is now valued at about $866 billion, making it the most substantial part of his fortune. Including his shares in Tesla and other projects, Musk's total value is expected to pass $1.1 trillion. Matt Durot, deputy editor at Forbes Wealth, shared with Reuters, "The second richest individual has been around $300 billion, which is less than a third of Musk’s potential worth tomorrow. " He also mentioned that only one other individual, Larry Ellison from Oracle, has ever reached a fortune of $400 billion.

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1971 to a Canadian mom and a South African dad, Musk went to the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1997. Over the following thirty years, he created a variety of companies that turned him from a tech entrepreneur into one of the most influential business leaders globally. Musk became well-known through Tesla and SpaceX. At Tesla, where he became CEO in 2008, he transformed electric cars from a minor concept into common technology, pushing traditional car manufacturers to speed up their electric vehicle initiatives. "He revived the world's appreciation for American creativity in car engineering," said Bob Lutz, the former vice chairman of General Motors, to Reuters.

In addition to Tesla and SpaceX, Musk has helped start several businesses, like Neuralink, which focuses on brain implants, and The Boring Company, which works on underground transportation. His purchase of Twitter for $44 billion in 2022, which he later renamed X, also broadened his reach beyond just technology and business.

Musk's remarkable wealth represents what many investors refer to as the "Elon premium"—the idea that his unique vision and skill in creating groundbreaking businesses deserve a value that surpasses standard financial assessments. The valuation of SpaceX has become the latest instance of this trend. "Just like Tesla, SpaceX is an investment in Elon Musk," said Matt Kennedy, a senior strategist at Renaissance Capital, which provides research and ETFs focused on IPOs, in a statement to Reuters. "A market value of $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion would certainly disregard all traditional valuation methods and is best described as the 'Elon Musk premium'," Kennedy remarked. Musk's journey to becoming a trillionaire occurs during ongoing discussions about wealth inequality and the rising influence of billionaire entrepreneurs across the globe.

While his fans view him as an innovative entrepreneur eager to take risks that others shun, his critics have expressed worries about the extent of power he holds through his companies and public persona. Despite the controversy, the figures reveal the truth: no one in recent history has built up wealth to this extent. From a South African-born businessperson who started online companies in the 1990s to a trillionaire whose fortune is greater than the GDP of some nations, Musk has reached a financial achievement unlike any seen before.
