Virginia’s Medicaid Program To Lose $1.4 Billion?

Senate plan could cost Virginia Medicaid program $1.4 billion over a period of 7 years. Virginia’s Medicaid program stands to lose about $1.4 billion over seven years under the U.S. Senate’s health care plan, according to a preliminary analysis.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Monday sent a news release reporting on the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services analysis of the Republican Senators bill, on the same day the Congressional Budget Office reported that the plan would cause 15 million more Americans to be without health insurance next year and 22 million more by the year 2026. It also said the Senate plan would reduce spending by $1 billion, with the largest savings of $772 million coming through a reduction in Medicaid spending.

Virginia refused to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. The state’s program is limited to low-income pregnant women, children, the elderly and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The House Republican health plan is estimated to cost Virginia about $708 million over seven years.

“The legislation currently up for a vote in the United States Senate would blow a hole in Virginia’s budget and severely impair our ability to offer health coverage and long-term care to the people who need them most,” McAuliffe said.

State budget makers would be forced to raise taxes or cut other core services to continue benefits, he said.

The Virginia analysis is preliminary and looks at the bill that was released on Thursday.
